Find out which process has locked a file?

Sometimes, you try to delete a file and receive access violation or file in use - errors. To successfully delete a file, you will need to identify the process which has locked the file. Since Windows Vista this is quite easy. Perform the following steps to know which process has locked a file:

  1. Start the task manager (CTRL + Shift + Esc)
  2. Go- to the Performance tab
  3. Click Resource Monitor
  4. Select the CPU tab
  5. In the search box, of the Associated Handles group, specify the name of the file which is locked and click enter.
  6. And there you go.
